Today I was up at 7AM – quite early for me! But Rick had asked me to make “corn breads for breakfast” so I did. And he was happy – Colleen doesn’t like them as they are too dry, which they are until you put milk and sugar on them. While we were having breakfast, a Stellar’s Jay came to the big bird feeder. They look just like our Eastern blue jays, except, they are totally blue and a very beautiful blue as well.
After breakfast, Colleen and I headed out on a road trip – west – about 20 miles. First stop was a bank, so I could replenish my slush fund. Then we went to a friend of Colleen’s home, where I got my hair cut. I think it is the best cut I have had in years. Shirley and her husband live on a lake, in a home filled with wonderful old antique furniture and collectibles. The little town they live near is called Ronald, with the mountains and beautiful tall straight Ponderosa pines, which are all over the area, as they were in New Mexico. We came back through Roslyn, which for those of you who watched NORTHERN EXPOSURE is where some of it was filmed and is where The Brick is. Colleen used to live in Roslyn. We keep driving east to Cle Elum, where we stopped at the Radio Shack and got my cell phone charger looked at, and they found that there was something stuck in my cell phone and opened it and took it out. Some black plastic from my car phone charger. So I bought a new car charger and all was well with the world. Then we stopped at Owens’s Meat Shop, (owned by the Owen twins) in the next block, and bought pepperoni for Brandon, their grandson; some Lanjaeger – much like the pepperoni, but much tastier; and some tri-tips for grilling tomorrow night.

Off and running, we drove past Crickleberry Lane, where the Hawley’s live, and went into Ellensburg. Colleen had some packages to mail at the UPS store, and then we met Rick for lunch. As I was getting Colleen and I iced tea (no sugar around these parts!), I was talking to a guy getting a soft drink, and forgot I was pushing the spigot! There was iced tea everywhere, and Colleen was laughing so hard as was the guy, while I must have used fifty paper napkins to sop up the mess! After lunch, we went to the grocery store, where Colleen picked two big pieces of frozen salmon, which they are taking to Houston with them. At the same time, Rick was picking up at the Safeway Grocery Store, orange sherbet with chocolates chips in it, also to go to Houston! They are packing a cooler with all these goodies, and getting dry ice tomorrow to put in. Then they put bungee cords around it, and check it. Rick says the airlines allow this if it is less than 5 pounds. Interesting.
We got back to the house about 2 PM. I was able to get on the computer and check my email. Colleen then gave me instructions on the alarm system, numbers to have just in case, and a tour of where everything in the house is that I may possibly need. I was able to get on the computer and check my email. I am typing this off-line as both Colleen and Rick need their computers right now. Plus I am finding this easier to write off-line and then put it into my blog.
While I was sitting at the dining room table going over some things, I saw a flash of black and white at the big bird feeder. It was a Black-Billed Magpie – they are as big or bigger than the jays. Two of them were playing king of the hill. Last night when we were having dinner, we heard owls hooting. It was so neat!
The hills right around here have wind farms on them, and the residents here do not appreciate them, including my cousins. First of all, they are really close to many houses, and secondly, none of the electricity produced even goes locally, but is sent down to California. I think myself that this particular group of wind turbines could have been put up on the hills further away from everyone, and be just or more productive, but apparently no one around here was consulted.
Today was a heat wave – 56 degrees this afternoon.
To be continued…
Adieu, Adios, Mahalo,
I love you,
Sally
