We had rain all night and it is actually a little chilly out today. In the mid-sixties, here on the hill. The wind is blowing steadily, and sun comes in and out. Artie and our young protege, Jordan, are at the beach. John and I opted out - I wanted to write and John had some projects to do. We all went to Coffees of Hawaii, with two cars, the electric and the gas. Artie and Jordan then went off with the gas powered car, and John and I collected the mail, and came back here in the electric. I have finally decided that I will have him teach me how to drive it. This model only goes a maximum of twenty five miles MPH, and only twenty five miles before it has to be plugged in, but it is good for going down for the mail, or Coffees, etc. Short distances.
Yesterday was a full day. All of us were up at 7AM and had breakfast. Jordan went with Shanawatt and Jordan's brother James, to help Emillia move to her new house. John, Artie, Will and I went to the airport to put Will on the plane back to San Diego. He emailed me this morning that he got back safely. We came back to the house, and gathered our things up to go into town to the AARP meeting at 9:30AM, of which John is the president. They were having installation of officers and a lunch catered in for all of us. I was surprised at the number of members, perhaps fifteen or twenty with three guests who were considering joining the group, and me, a visitor! And with the only camera, I took a picture of the officers and just now figured out how to send it to the local newspaper, THE MOLOKAI DISPATCH.
We came back to the house, and found Jordan, who said Emillia and Matt were moved out of their old house, and in to their new one. After some relaxation time, which we do most every day, either lying down for a power nap, or reading, John, Artie, and I packed up his loom and our knitting, and taking two cars, one borrowed from their neighbor, Dan Bennett, a wonderful potter, we drove back into town and unloaded the loom at Teri's Gift Shop. John took his car over to have some routine maintenance done.
Teri has lived here on Molokai for a long time. She really knows the history of the island as well as that of Hawaii in general. Her gift shop is full of love and very spiritual. It is where we chant on Friday nights. She sells many items made on Molokai or in Hawaii, and I was having a wonderful time finding gifts and piling them up on the counter. As I did, people were coming in to purchase gifts, and one doctor who had never ever come in to her store because he is an Hawaiian activist, and she is considered haolie, came in to buy some things. She was amazed. And when she finally closed the store and added up my purchases, she told me that I had brought her good luck. And to come back every day and just put items on the counter!
As I have said before, most people on Molokai use the barter system. One man (who was drop dead gorgeous by the way) came in to the store with butter crunch lettuce for Teri and Artie. Artie had traded some avocadoes with someone else for some fresh items. This is how it is done. Artie's avocado tree is just loaded. I am one of the recipients of its fruit!!! Yeah! Artie and John went across the way to pick up their box of veggies and fruit, that they get every Wednesday, from one of the sustainable farms here on the island. It is sort of a coop as people who want to get the boxes each week, pay in, and then get the weekly offerings. We put the loom back into the borrowed car, and came home.
After having raw vegan spaghetti sauce, with whole wheat spaghetti, which is unbelievably good, and the dishes were washed and put away, John put on the movie WHAT THE BLEEP DO I KNOW. Every one of us had seen it before, but as it is something that can be seen more than once and learn something knew each time, it was great seeing it again. Exhausted from such a busy day, we all crashed afterward.
Next blog I am going to tell you about some of the food that I have been eating, all raw vegan or live vegan as some call it. There are a few cross-overs also, as Artie calls them.
Life is good!
Adieu, Adios, Mahalo,
I love you all,
Sally
